Activity
By Panos Bourtzoglou

This iconic trail traces the rim of Santorini’s caldera, offering one of the most breathtaking walking experiences in the Cyclades.

If you're staying at Alexander’s Suites in Oia and looking for a rewarding adventure that blends panoramic views, physical activity, and cultural immersion, the hike from Oia to Fira is a must. This iconic trail traces the rim of Santorini’s caldera, offering one of the most breathtaking walking experiences in the Cyclades.

Starting Point: Alexander’s Suites, Oia

Nestled on the edge of the caldera in Oia, Alexander’s Suites is the perfect place to begin the hike. As you step out of the hotel, you're already treated to sweeping views of the volcanic cliffs and sapphire waters of the Aegean Sea. The cobblestone path starts near the main pedestrian walkway of Oia, just minutes from the hotel, and winds its way through the village’s whitewashed buildings, blue-domed churches, and narrow alleys.

The Route: What to Expect

The full hike from Oia to Fira covers roughly 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) and takes about 3 to 5 hours, depending on your pace and how often you stop for photos or rest.

Section 1: Oia to Imerovigli

This first half is the most remote and scenic. After leaving Oia, the trail moves away from the bustle of the village and follows a rugged footpath along the cliffside. You'll pass landmarks like the Byzantine castle ruins and eventually reach the small chapel of Profitis Ilias. Be prepared for some elevation changes and rocky paths, but the views of the caldera, Skaros Rock, and the endless sea are unforgettable.

Section 2: Imerovigli to Fira

As you approach Imerovigli, the trail becomes more urban but no less beautiful. This part of the hike takes you through some of Santorini’s most luxurious areas, offering views of boutique hotels, infinity pools, and terraced restaurants. From here, it’s a relatively gentle descent into Fira, the capital of Santorini. Along the way, you’ll encounter more churches, photo opportunities, and chances to refuel with a cold drink or snack.

Tips for a Great Hike

  • Start Early: Begin the hike in the morning to avoid the midday heat and enjoy the golden light over the caldera.

  • Wear Proper Shoes: The path varies from paved sections to dirt trails and volcanic rock—sturdy walking shoes are essential.

  • Stay Hydrated: Bring water and sun protection, especially in summer.

  • Camera Ready: You’ll want to capture the stunning scenery, so keep your phone or camera accessible.

  • Optional Return: You can either hike back, take a bus, or grab a taxi from Fira to return to Oia.
